Surf Lifesaving

Surf Lifesaving

Surf life saving originated in Australia in the early 20th century, when volunteer groups formed to protect swimmers from dangerous surf conditions after restrictions on daytime ocean bathing were lifted. The movement quickly spread, leading to organized clubs and competitive events that tested lifesaving skills.

As a sport, surf life saving combines elements of rescue techniques and athletic competition, with events such as surf swims, board paddling, surf ski races, and beach sprints. Athletes demonstrate strength, speed, and endurance while showcasing the skills needed to keep people safe in the surf.
